Fantasy scene with clock, owl and creatures on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
Four photographs show the same tattoo from different angles on a lower leg. The scene includes a clock face with ivy, a barn owl, a tall-haired figure beside a companion, a large furry creature, a maze-like stone structure and a dry yellow landscape. The shading is painterly and smooth, with bold colour in the creatures and warm yellows in the ground, set against dark greens and blacks.

Mrs Ashdown came in last week wanting a loaf shaped like the old cellar at Harrow Lane, the one with the stone hedges and no way out. She said her grandson had gone down there after a ball and not come up for a whole night. I told her we do tins, not labyrinths. She left a silver sixpence on the counter anyway, and I have not yet found the nerve to put it in the till.
This morning the sixpence was gone, and in its place lay a single bay leaf folded into a tiny crown. I searched under the racks. Nothing. Then the big yellow tom sat on the shelf of rye and stared at me as though I were the one who had gone missing. I have started kneading a loaf in the shape of a door. If it rises the way I want, I will bake it for the stroke of five and see who knocks.
