Embracing couple in rope heart on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A tattoo of a couple embracing, the woman with a flower in her hair and the man with a moustache and high collar, set inside a heart-shaped rope border. A crescent moon and a sun sit at the top, with a large red flower with a yellow centre and green leaves below. Bold black outlines and solid fills in red, yellow, green and brown dominate the composition.

The band never made it out to Caliche Wells that Saturday, so Walt set the gramophone on the bonnet of the Dodge and wound the crank until the record found its groove. I had flour up to my wrists from the pies I'd been meaning to take to the Harmon boys, and I told him I wasn't dancing in a dust wind in my good blouse. He said the dust was only the moon's way of sweeping the floor.

We danced anyway, on the packed red gravel between the pumps and the road sign. The sun had gone down behind the mesa in a long orange smear, and the moon came up thin as a fingernail over the water tower. Walt held me the way he had at the Grange dance in 1931, one hand flat on my back and the other gripping my fingers as though the road might take them off if he let go.
Somewhere past the third record he stopped and pulled a length of old braided rope from his coat pocket. He had cut it from the tow hitch of the truck that broke down outside Dry Fork the winter before, and he'd spent three nights working it into a loop. When he held it up it made a heart, lopsided and stubborn, and he said if he couldn't yet manage a ring, he could at least give me a frame.
I still have it nailed above the till. Each morning the first light comes over the highway and lands on the rope, and I count the trucks that stop for coffee. Walt has been gone six years now, but the sun always gets to that rope before I do.
