Marisol had been selling apples from the tailgate of her uncle's truck for three hours when the woman in the grey coat walked out of the heat shimmer. Nobody walked the Route 7 shoulder in August. The woman carried a wicker basket on one arm, and she stopped at the stand and studied the fruit as if it might bite back.

"Those are very red," she said. "Are they sweet?" Marisol said they were the sweetest in three counties, which was her uncle's line and not hers. The woman lifted the reddest apple, turned it under her thumb, and smiled with a mouth that seemed to have been painted on a little too carefully. She paid in coins from a purse with a silver clasp. Behind her a pickup slowed, honked twice, and kept going, its dust hanging over the road like a curtain nobody wanted to pull back.
When the sun dropped behind the mesa and the stand held nothing but empty crates, Marisol found a seventh apple wedged under the tarp. It was glossy and cold, and someone had pressed a tiny gold crown into its skin with the point of a pin. She turned it over in her palm for a long time. Then she put it on the dashboard of the truck beside the bent wooden puppet her grandmother had carved, and she drove home without touching the radio.
In the morning the stand had a new sign in careful handwriting: Free to anyone who tells the truth. Marisol stood in the dust reading it while the first heat came up off the asphalt. She said the true thing out loud to nobody, that she had been afraid of the woman and had still wanted the apple. Where the woman's footprints had pressed into the shoulder, a pale yellow flower was already opening.
