Fatally Yours banners with skull and flower

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing on paper shows a tattoo design with two curled banners, the upper one reading Fatally Yours, a small skull within a heart shape, a large open flower and leaves. The linework is bold and even, with light grey hatching and shading in the banners and heart. The design is black and grey only and is centred on a plain sheet, with a blurred eraser and pen at the top of the frame.

The sign over Pryce's chandlery has been crooked since Tuesday, and I have been too busy to fix it, because I have spent every spare minute copying your name into the margins of the stock book. Mr Pryce says a sign-writer who daydreams will end up painting his own gravestone wrong. He may be right. The S keeps coming out like a question.

Your note came on the carrier with a pressed violet still holding its shape between the folds. Fatally yours, you wrote, underlined twice, as if I might doubt it. I did not doubt it. I had known since the regatta on the Ouse that you could knock a man flat with a single look, and I have been walking into lamp posts ever since. I cut the note into a strip and pinned it inside my hat band, where Mr Pryce cannot see it and remark on it at breakfast.

So here is my answer, drawn small on the back of a delivery docket because it was the only paper in the shop. Two banners, one bearing your words, the other left blank for whatever you decide to call me next. A little skull in a heart, because I am no fool and know what I am promising. And a flower, because you said once that you would rather have a bloom than a diamond, and the bloom costs me nothing but patience. Post it back before Thursday. I will be at the window with the brush in my hand, listening for the carrier's bell.
