Revolver and rose flash design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil or ink line drawing of a revolver with a large rose and leaves behind the barrel and grip, with small beaded chains hanging from the top and left. The outlines are bold and even, with hatched panels and scrolled filigree detail on the frame and cylinder. The drawing is in black linework on a pale sheet with no colour applied.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, it's all that's left of the floor after Saturday. This is about the Palais on Marrow Street and a man called Ellis Dunning, who came in every Thursday with a rose behind his ear and a revolver in his coat, which was not the usual arrangement for a dance.

The revolver had a grip worked with scrolls like a fiddle's head, and he never took it out. He only tapped his lapel over it when Mrs Coyle at the cloakroom asked him to pay his penny. Everyone knew it was empty. His mother had strung jet beads through the cylinder to keep it shut, one bead for every dance he had not yet asked a girl to.
Then in March a girl called Winifred Shaw walked in out of the rain with a rose she'd bought off a barrow, and she asked him to dance without asking whether he could. He danced the foxtrot badly. She laughed at him, so he yanked the chain loose right there on the boards. The beads rolled out across the floor like a dropped rosary, and the band had to stop because nobody could hear themselves think.
Hand on heart, I'm telling you that gun was never loaded. Ellis walked her home and gave her the revolver to keep. She carried it in her handbag until the day she died, with a pressed petal from that barrow rose sitting in the cylinder where the bullets should have been. Mind your step on the way out. The sawdust is all that's left of the floor.
