Lace heart ornament design drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black ink drawing of an ornamental lace design built around a central heart with a fine mesh pattern. Scrolling leaves, filigree motifs and chains of beads with teardrop pendants hang from the upper edge in a symmetrical composition. The image is monochrome, with crisp dark linework on a pale, softly shaded background.

The bobbins have been clicking since six, and the panel on your lap still has a hole the size of a thumbnail where the heart meets the leaves. Vi says you can leave it. You can't. The Okafor wedding is on Saturday, in a church that charges by the hour, and the bodice has to be on the van by Friday noon or the whole order goes back to Leeds for a month.

So you work the drops. Each teardrop is a glass bead on silk thread, knotted twice, hung so the chain will swing when she walks. Seven down the left, seven down the right, and one at the point that you will never be able to reach once the veil is pinned. Vi taught you to hang them from a single pin so they all shiver together, like a row of people deciding whether to laugh.

By midnight the card behind the lace has gone soft at the corners, and the black thread has started to look like writing. You snap a strand, tie it off, bite it short. Then you do the thing Vi never approved of. You hang the last bead a fraction crooked, just enough that only you will notice, so the chain falls a little differently on one side. It is a small fault, and it is yours.

On Friday the panel goes out folded in tissue, the beads ticking against each other in the box. Days later a photograph arrives from a stranger's phone. The heart sits at the centre of the bodice, and when the bride turns to laugh at someone, one drop lifts a fraction and catches the light.
