Colour realism tattoo on the ribs showing a portrait in mirrored sunglasses with a cigarette, red Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas lettering and black bats.

Fear and Loathing portrait on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A large colour portrait of a figure wearing reflective aviator sunglasses with a cigarette between the lips, the lenses reflecting orange and red tones. Red script lettering reads Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas beneath the face, with black bats and small dark marks scattered around the design. Soft shading blends into the skin with blue and yellow accents behind the head, and the composition wraps across the side of the torso.

Dear Danny,

I am writing this on a motel notepad at the Desert Star, on the Nevada side of the line, where the sign has lost its last two letters and nobody has bothered to fix the rest. The man at the desk took my cash without looking up. He had mirrored glasses pushed on top of his head, the same orange as the sunset, and when I asked him where the bats came from he said they had been here longer than the casino and would be here after it.

You will say I should have come home by now. You are right. The car is the rental from Barstow, the agency wants it back by Friday, and I have eleven dollars and a packet of cigarettes with two left in it. At the crossing the officer leaned into my window and asked my business. I told him I was carrying a letter to a man who had asked me to stop talking. He wrote something down and waved me through, which I suppose is the most honest thing anyone has done for me this year.

Tonight the light went copper across the car park, and the windscreen caught it so every vehicle looked like it was burning. I sat on the bonnet and watched the bats come out from under the roof of the old ice house, black scraps flung up against the sky. I counted them the way you used to count sheep when you couldn't sleep. I got to forty before I lost my place.

Come and find me before the glasses wear out. I will leave the porch light on.
