Skull, woman and rose on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo combines a grey skull, a woman's face in profile with bold red lips and short wavy hair, and a red rose at the bottom. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft blended tones on the skull and face. Red and blue ink splashes behind the skull and a blue feather at the edge add colour and movement to the composition.

Put the sherry down, Dennis, and listen, because I have waited forty years to tell this in a room that smells of school dinners. Marjorie Pell sat behind me in the back row of Form Four and drew skulls in the margins of her atlas. Not sad ones. Grinning ones, with lipstick.

Her father kept the signal box at Halden Cross, and every Thursday she walked the line with his flask. One October she came back with a rose she had pinched from the station garden, red as a brake lamp, and a jay's feather stuck in her plait. She said the feather was for luck and the rose was for the signalman's wife, who had died in the spring. Then she painted her mouth the same red, right there on the bench, and said a face should be the last thing you lose.
The splashes came later, flicked from a fountain pen onto the wall behind the bike sheds, a bit of Mr Garrow's blue ink and a bit of poster paint from the art cupboard. The rest of us thought she was showing off. She was practising, though we did not know it. Two summers after we left, the river came up over the Halden Cross embankment, the signal box went under with it, and Marjorie went down the steps to bring the lamp in before the water reached it.
They found the flask on the bank, stoppered and still warm, and nothing else. I have kept the feather. Look, it is still blue. Somebody at this table owes me a dance.
