Two black and white pen drawings of flourished script lettering, one reading Fearless and one reading Écriture Manuscrite, with a marker pen beside the second design.

Fearless and Écriture Manuscrite script lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The top image shows the word Fearless in a flowing copperplate-style script with a large looping flourish underneath. The lower image shows the French phrase Écriture Manuscrite in a similar hand-drawn script, with a black marker pen lying across the paper. Both are drawn in black ink on white paper with smooth, even strokes and no colour.

At half past eleven the rain had stopped, but the gutters still ran, and Odile Renard was still at the long table under the lamp, drawing the same capital F for the fortieth time. Her teacher had pinned a card above the board that read only one word in her cramped hand: Fearless. Odile had taken it for a joke until she tried to write it without lifting the nib.

The copperplate would not sit. Every loop pulled the next one wide, and the tail of the f swung out like a kite in a bad wind. She rolled the pen between her fingers and thought of her grandmother, who had copied birth registers for the town hall before typewriters arrived, and who once told her that a hand was only nerve written down slowly. Odile folded the sheet, then unfolded it. Far off a tram bell rang once, and on the far side of the square a bakery shutter rattled up.

Near two she gave up on ink entirely and took the black marker from her bag, the one she used for labelling crates. It was too blunt for copperplate, but it went exactly where she sent it. She wrote Écriture Manuscrite across the page in a looser hand, letting the long stroke of the E run down and under the words, and for the first time the line did not fight her.

At dawn she pinned both sheets to the wall beside the window. The sun came up behind the chimneys and laid their shadows across the paper, and she left the marker where it lay, uncapped, the tip still dark.
