Hand-drawn spiral and swirl tattoo designs

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

Six vertical, thin-lined designs are drawn in black ink on translucent paper, each built from looping spirals, curls and small dots. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading or fill, and the designs are arranged in loose staggered columns. A green pen lies across the top of the sheet, and the image is a flat overhead view.

You are the only one on platform four who notices the pen rolling slowly toward the edge, and you catch it before it drops onto the tracks. The ticket office has been shut since nine, and the departures board flickers between a Leeds service and a message that says nothing at all. Someone has left a sheet of tracing paper on the bench, six curling marks inked across it in a row like wires strung between poles. Each one loops back on itself, a spiral tucked inside a spiral, with a single dot hanging off the top like a stopped signal.

You pick it up because the wind wants it. The lines are so fine they seem to hold the light, and the longest one, the one that shoots off at a slant and ends in a neat hook, reminds you of the ribbon your grandmother used to unwind from spools on the kitchen table. You trace it with your thumb and realise the curls are not decoration. Each one is a train of thought that doubles back before it can leave, the way you have been doing all evening, circling the same platform bench.

The last train pulls in with its doors already open. You fold the paper once, carefully, and slide it into your coat. At the step you turn and see the bench is empty, the pen gone too, and the dot at the top of the nearest curl seems, for a moment, to have moved one notch further along the line.
