Make Memories That Last Forever lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A hand holds a fine pen over a sheet of white paper showing a black ink lettering design that reads Make Memories That Last Forever. The script words Memories and Last are set in large flowing letters, with block capitals for Make and Forever and a small That, all surrounded by curling flourishes. Fine hatching, stippling and dots add shading and texture around the letters.

Oswin Tatlow had been asked to letter the words across the window of the Lantern Street photographic studio, and the client, Mrs Dorrit Vane, wanted the whole sentence with every curl and shadow she had seen on a wedding invitation. He drew the first version at his kitchen table on cartridge paper, the fine pen scratching while the kettle went cold beside him, and by midnight he had filled three sheets with swirls that looped back on themselves like a fern uncurling.

Mrs Vane came to check the draft the next morning and tapped the small word in the middle with one gloved finger. "Why is this one so little?" Oswin explained that the big words were for people passing in the street, and the small ones were for the people who stopped to read. She frowned at the dots he had scattered around the flourishes like frost on a pane. "And these?" she asked. "So the eye has somewhere to rest," he said, though he had only added them because the paper looked too bare.
He painted it in black enamel and gold leaf over three wet days, lying on a plank above the pavement while the Saturday crowds stepped round his ladder. The shop changed hands twice. The gold flaked first, then the hatching softened into grey, and the curls on either side of the word Memories were slowly eaten by salt wind off the harbour. One autumn a girl carrying a tripod box stopped in front of the glass and sounded the letters out under her breath. Make, she read, and then the rest, and then forever, which was the only part still sharp enough to make out clearly.
