Lotus and bead anklet on a foot
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is photographed on a dark surface, showing a tattoo that looks like a beaded anklet. A chain of small round beads with shaded highlights runs from the ankle across the top of the foot and ends in a detailed lotus flower near the toes. The linework is clean and the shading is grey, with the lotus outlined and partly filled in.

The boats came in on the evening tide, and the women of Keld Haven counted them from the harbour wall, the way their mothers had. Eleven came back that year. The twelfth was the Gannet, and her net was empty except for a string of pale stones knotted to the mooring rope, each one no bigger than a pea and shining like wet pebbles.

Hilda Marr took the string home and hung it on a nail by the door. Nobody in Keld would touch it. Old Sorrel Penn said the stones were the eyes of drowned girls who had gone looking for husbands, and that the lotus wrapped at the end was a flower that grew only in the sea-caves past the Scar, where no net had been. Hilda did not believe her. She believed the string was warm in the mornings.
In the spring the sea went flat and silver for three weeks, and not a boat was lost. On the last morning of the calm, Hilda walked down to the shingle with the string around her ankle, tied tight, and waded out to her knees. The stones clicked against one another like counting. She said the names of everyone she had buried, one bead for each, until the chain was empty.
When she waded back, the lotus at the end of the string had opened, pale and wet, and it stayed open all summer. The Gannet went out every week after that and came home full.
