Three-panel photo of a black and purple feather tattoo with birds on the top of a foot, with a faded star and heart design shown in the first panel.

Feather and birds on a foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

The collage has three panels of the same foot. The top panel shows a faded grey-green design of stars, hearts and swirls, the middle panel shows a purple outlined feather with birds and stars drawn over it, and the bottom panel shows a solid black and grey feather with birds rising above it. The feather is shaded with fine strokes and the birds are simple silhouettes, set against bare skin on the top of the foot.

Dear Tom, the lamp at Scarrow Head went out again on Tuesday, so I have spent three nights up the tower with a tin of paraffin and your grandfather's wrench, and my hands smell like the inside of a boat. I am writing on the back of the tide tables because the notepaper is in the chart drawer under the barometer, and I am not climbing down for it until the wick is trimmed.

The reason I am writing at all is the feather. A herring gull blundered in through the open gallery door on Monday, flapping like a wet sheet, and when I got it out I found a long grey primary feather snagged on the brass rail. I did not keep it for myself. I pressed it inside the logbook at the page for the seventh, where you wrote your initials in pencil the summer you were nine, and now every time I open the book there is a feather lying across your name as if it has just dropped there and is waiting to be picked up.

Mrs Crake came across on the supply boat this morning with a bag of stale bread for the gulls. She stood at the rail for a long while, looking at the reef where the rock pools catch the light, and said the young ones on the mainland have started sending her drawings of gulls and stars, which she thinks is a sign of something, though she would not say what. I told her the only sign I know is the one that comes on at dusk, and she laughed and threw the bread too hard.

Come home at Christmas if the boat runs. Bring the spanner back, and bring the good paraffin with the blue lid, not the cheap stuff that smokes the glass. The gulls are fat this year and the stars on the reef have been very bright. Your loving sister, Ada.
