Matching bird and heart tattoos on two legs
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
Two people's lower legs are shown, each with a tattoo of two dark silhouetted birds linked by a looping line that forms a heart. The birds are solid black or dark blue, while the heart outlines are fine lines in pink on the left and blue on the right. The photo is taken close up in soft indoor light, with the two tattoos mirrored diagonally across the frame.

The loft smells of straw and damp feathers, and Nell is already crying into her cardigan sleeve when you climb the ladder with the tin of corn. The train for Leeds leaves at eleven. Her father has said she can go on one condition, that she takes Bramble, the grey cock who has never once missed the harbour wall on his way home, and you have said you will keep Sable, the speckled hen with the bad eye, because somebody has to look after the birds that won't fly far.

You take a reel of blue cotton from your mother's sewing box and Nell takes the pink, and you knot a length to each bird's leg with fingers too clumsy for the work. Nell says a pigeon with a thread on its leg always remembers the other one. You say that is nonsense, which is what you always say when she is right. Still, you tie the loose ends together between the two birds, a long slack line that you fold, without meaning to, into a little heart on the rafter before the train whistle gets the better of you.
The letters come on Tuesdays in Nell's round hand, full of Leeds rain and a landlady who keeps a parrot. Sable stays put and eats her corn and says nothing. Then one evening in March the chapel bell is ringing for evensong and a grey shape drops onto the wire outside the loft, wet through, the pink thread still knotted to its leg and dragging behind it like a broken kite string.
You hold Bramble in your palm and work the knot loose with your teeth. There is a scrap of paper tied under the thread, folded small. It says only: *Tell Sable I've kept my end.* You look at the blue thread on Sable's leg, frayed to nothing, and you find that you have been holding your breath since the train pulled out.
