Feather and birds with script quote on back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded feather stands upright on the upper back and its lower edge breaks into a flock of small birds drifting towards the shoulder. To the right, a line of black cursive script reads 'You've been given this life because you are strong enough to handle it' over four lines. The tattoo is in black ink with grey shading, set against warm, softly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at the Harrow Vale reunion expected Miss Pelling to come at all, let alone arrive at the back room of the Crown with a carrier bag of grey feathers and a voice that had not softened in forty years of teaching Latin to the village children. She set the bag on a trestle table, between the sausage rolls and the bowl of warm punch, and told them all to sit down.

Old Tom Fairweather, who once set fire to the school register and had never been forgiven, was first to reach in. The feather he drew out was a goose quill, though its vane was dark as a rook's wing and it shivered in his fingers although the windows were shut. She said that a feather from a bird that has flown a long way holds the last true thing said to it, and that hers were older than their fathers' stories, so they were to mind them and take one each.

Sandra Peake read the faint writing along the shaft, and went quite pale. It said they had been given this life because they were strong enough to handle it. When they asked the old woman how she knew, she only smiled and poured herself a small sherry.

Tom carried his feather to the window and opened the latch. The wind took it. It broke apart into a flock of small birds that wheeled over the church roof and then settled along the churchyard wall, one for every year nobody had spoken of, and none of them flew off until the lamps went out.

Years later, the children of Harrow Vale still say that if your coat grows too heavy, a feather will turn up in the pocket. When you find it, the birds will already be waiting on the wall, patient as schoolmasters, ready to go on with you.
