I put the little cross in the middle where I couldn't choose between a prayer and a promise, so I drew it there and let the line carry on around it. You'll say I've spoiled a good sentence. Let me spoil it, then. Your ship sails at four, and I'd rather you carried something plain and crooked in your pocket than nothing at all.
Read it on the gangway if you must, then fold it small and keep it near your chest. The tide turns at midnight. I'll be at the lamp post by the fish market, the way I was the night you first came up those steps, and I am not going anywhere until I see your face come round the corner.
