Fine line black tattoo of an arrow with a feather fletching and script along the shaft, placed on the forearm.

Feather arrow with script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink arrow runs diagonally down the forearm, with a feather at the top and an arrowhead at the bottom. A cursive word is written along the shaft, and a small dotted circle sits behind the middle of the script. The linework is fine and even, and the tattoo is shown against a textured pale wall with soft, even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the tiller tucked under her hip and the Mary Ann drifting toward the lock at Hawkesbury when her uncle Tom came up from the cabin carrying a tin box. He set it on the coaming without a word, the way he had done everything since the flood took the wharf at Stoke.

Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, lay an arrow no longer than her forearm. The shaft was painted with a name she had not heard spoken since she was nine. The fletching was a single grey feather, the point cut from a bread tin. Tom said her grandmother had shot it from the towpath the winter the cut froze over, aiming at a heron, and it had sailed across the ice and into the reeds. Nobody had found it until he went looking for the spare sheave last week.

Nell turned the arrow in the thin light. Someone had inked a dotted ring round the middle of the shaft, small as a ha'penny, the sort of mark you make to show where to stop. She understood slowly that the ring sat at exactly the distance from the old boathouse that her grandmother used to pace out, and that the heron had never been the target at all.

She strung the bow in the stern locker, drew it back to her ear, and let the arrow go toward the far bank. It dropped into the willows well short of the mark. Tom laughed for the first time that year. "Close enough," he said, and Nell took the tiller back and steered them on towards the gate.
