Feather dissolving into birds on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large feather is shown in soft, shaded black and grey, with its quill and barbs drawn in fine strokes. Its edges break up into small silhouetted birds flying off towards the upper right. The tattoo sits on the side of the ribcage, and the subject is photographed from the side with a leopard print top covering the upper torso.

You have been sorting pinions since the lamps were lit, separating the grey from the brown, when Teodor the fowler sets a single feather on your bench and says it came off a bird that will never be caught. It is as long as your forearm, dark at the tip and silvered near the quill, and its barbs are still combed flat from the wind over the marsh.

He wants arrows fletched with it for the governor's hunt. You refuse, not out of piety but because the feather is too fine to waste on a boar. You lift it to the shutter where the morning slants in, and the vane softens against the light. Where the barbs end, small shapes are lifting free, dark as ash, one, then five, then a whole scatter of wings rising off the edge and turning north over the harbour wall.
Teodor swears and makes the sign the sailors make. You do not look up. Your hands know the work: you pinch the calamus, trim, and bind with waxed thread. But the bench holds nothing now except the quill, hollow and pale, and the room smells of salt and sudden cold.
By the time the bell rings for the second watch, the shutter is open and the gulls have gone quiet on the roof. You keep the quill in a clay jar on the sill and tell no one. Some mornings you wake to a rustle in the rafters, and when you climb up there is nothing but dust and one grey down, drifting out toward the sea.
