Kneeling angel with red flower on lower back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A kneeling winged angel with long hair sits on the lower back, holding a small red flower close to her chest. The figure and wings are rendered in soft grey shading with fine detail in the feathers and fabric, with scattered petals on the skin below her. The red flower is the only strong colour, set against the greys of the rest of the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learned the names of the ropes before you learned the stars, and by the third week out of Valparaiso Mr Haddow had stopped trying to teach you the second. The Corinna Bell was eleven days past the Horn, her hold heavy with nitrate, her figurehead gone grey with salt. The carved woman at her prow had folded wings and a bowed head, and the crew called her Aggie because nobody wanted to say a sad thing on a happy deck.

On the night the flying fish came aboard, you found Haddow sitting on the hatch cover with a letter in one hand and a dried red geranium in the other. He had pressed it between the pages of his Bible at Port Stanley and it had bled pink into the paper. 'Read it to me,' he said, 'I can't make the ink hold still.' So you read it aloud by the binnacle lamp, and it was full of a kitchen in Penzance and a daughter who could already whistle through her teeth.

The wind dropped before dawn. Petals from the same geranium, or what was left of them, skittered across the scrubbed planks like confetti after a funeral. Haddow folded the letter into his coat and went below without a word, and you understood he was not going to answer it, only keep it close to the place where the cold came through.

Two days later the Corinna Bell raised the Lizard. You stood at the rail while the grey shoulder of Cornwall lifted out of the haze, and far below you the old figurehead took her first spray of home. When the pilot boat came alongside, Haddow was already waiting at the rail with the letter in his fist, and the wind, for once, was blowing the right way.
