Feather, nautilus shell and flower line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing on plain white paper shows a feather curling upwards, a nautilus shell spiralling beside it, and a large open flower at the lower left. Small leaves, sprigs and small blossoms fill the gaps, and the flower and shell sit inside delicate scrolling outlines. The fine, even linework has no shading or colour, and the design fills the left side of the frame with open space to the right.

Dearest Ada, the nautilus came up in Mr Pryce's net on Tuesday, and he would not part with it for any money, so I have spent three evenings drawing it instead. You will laugh at my hand. Every chamber winds inside the last like a stair built by someone who meant to climb out of their own house, and the pearly lip of it caught the lamp so that I had to stop and blow on my fingers.

I have put the peacock feather from the hall vase beside it, the one Mother said was unlucky to bring indoors. I did not think it unlucky. It curls at the tip the way a question does when you have not yet decided whether to ask it. Under the shell I have drawn the poppy you pressed in the Bible the summer before the church roof fell in, and round them all a fence of scrolling that will not stay still on the page. Every time I rub it out, the leaves come back a little larger.

Mr Pryce says the animal inside lived in the outermost room and moved on when it outgrew it, leaving the empty houses behind for the next to find. I asked him whether it was sad. He said it was merely practical, and went back to mending his lines. So I have left the last whorl open on my drawing, with no ink in it at all. I thought you might like to fill it in when you come home at Michaelmas. You always did have the steadier hand.
