Floral swirl sketch design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a black line drawing of flowers, leaves, buds and curling vines arranged in a loose asymmetric cluster. The linework is sketchy and doodle-like, with varied line weights and open spirals. It is drawn in black ink on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The sketchbook had been Ruth's since the bus depot, and the pages were already full of other people's doodles by the time she got it back from the lost property office in March. Somebody had filled the back half with vines. Not careful vines, the kind you draw while a phone call goes on too long, loops opening into spirals, buds stuck on at the ends like afterthoughts. Ruth sat on the radiator in the flat above the launderette and turned the pages slowly, the way she'd once read letters from her mother.

On the ninth page the vines had grown toward the edge of the paper and given up there, one spiral left open and unfinished, a single petal hanging in air. Someone had written underneath in pencil, very small: stay for the second bloom. Ruth laughed out loud, alone, and the sound startled her. She had not laughed at anything since the funeral.
She found a biro in the pocket of her coat and, without thinking about it, started a new vine off the same stalk, one curl at a time, following the loose hand as if it were a path. Her line wobbled and thickened where the pressure was wrong. The flowers came out lopsided, five-petalled, a little too eager. By midnight the page was crowded, and at the bottom corner she drew a bud that refused to open, and beside it, in her own cramped writing, she wrote: second bloom, mine.
