Engraved acanthus scroll design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a stylised acanthus scroll ornament drawn in brown ink on a white background, with curling leaves and tendrils branching from a central stem. The linework is fine and engraved, with dense hatching and stippling that builds shadow inside the leaf forms. The design is a single monochrome drawing, centred and filling most of the frame.

Ada Penhallow had been told twice by the overman that a lamp bracket was no place for flourishes, and she had kept cutting them anyway, in the back room above the chapel hall where the light came in grey off the spoil heaps. Her father had engraved pay tokens for the colliery company for thirty years. He had taught her to hold the graver low and let it skate, to press the hatching so close the copper went dark like wet slate.

The pattern book was his too. Acanthus leaves, he called them, though nobody in Redruth or Camborne had ever seen one growing. Leaves that curled back on themselves and sent out tendrils, each one a little more stubborn than the last. He said the Romans had carved them on pillars, and the masons who built the chapel had copied them in stone above the door. Ada thought they looked more like bracken fists opening after frost.
When the shaft flooded in March and eleven men did not come up, the company wanted tokens for the widows, plain and quick. Ada cut the scrolls anyway. She stippled every leaf until the shadows held, and sent the plates down on the Tuesday carrier without a note.
The bill came back with a single instruction in the manager's neat hand: remove the ornament. She did not. Instead she pressed the last set of tokens herself, one for each name, the scroll curling round the initials like a hand closing over something it meant to keep.
