Small blossom tattoo on the upper ear
Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo
A close-up of an ear showing a small five-petalled flower tattoo on the upper outer rim. The petals are drawn with a fine black outline and filled with soft pink and red tones, and a small clear gem stud sits at the centre of the flower. A second stud earring is visible on the earlobe, and the background is out of focus hair.

Gather in closer, you lot at the back, and mind the rope. The fair came up the Severn road the spring the old cherry at Hollins Bridge went white in a single night, and nobody could say why. Ask the ferryman and he'll tell you it was frost. Ask Nell Carraway, who sold brandy-snaps off the back of the dodgem wagon, and she'll tell you it was the bead.

It was a clear glass bead no bigger than a pea, dropped by a juggler from Bristol who had strung it on a wire and forgotten it. Nell found it in the sawdust and pushed it through a hole in her ear, where it caught the lamplight every time she turned to make change. Each night she walked the bank down to the bridge, and each night the tree stood a little barer, as though something were drinking the colour out of it.
Now here's the turn, so listen. On the last evening, with the wagons already hitched and the horses stamping, Nell climbed the old trunk and pressed that bead into the first bud she could reach. By morning five petals had opened round it, pink at the tips and red at the heart, and the whole tree came back within a week. The fair never returned to Hollins. Nell went on up the road with her small glass stone set right into the blossom, and the ferryman says the bank still flowers in March, low down, where nobody planted anything.
