Dreamcatchers and feathers on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of two dreamcatchers with feathers and leaves wraps across the upper leg, with one larger dreamcatcher and a smaller one. The linework is dark and the feathers are shaded in grey, with small turquoise gems set into the web centres. The bare leg and feet rest on a blue bedsheet with a blue duvet at the top of the frame.

Dear Ede,

The jays have come back to the edge of the wood early this year, and Mr Harrow's boy has been bringing me their feathers in a tobacco tin, one at a time, as if I'd pay him in anything but ginger biscuits. I've strung the willow hoops you left on the nail by the door. The big one is finished. You'd laugh at the knots, which are as crooked as Father's teeth, but the web holds, and I set the blue glass beads from your mother's necklace in the middle of each, where a spider would sit if spiders had any sense.
Mrs Pollard came round yesterday asking for one for her grandson, who has been crying out in his sleep since the fire at the mill. I told her what you told me when we were girls: the web lets the good dreams through and keeps the rest tangled until morning. She didn't believe me, but she took it anyway, and she hung it above his bed with the feathers pointing down, the way you always said they should.
Here is the strange part. Last night I dreamt of the coast, of you standing on the grey shingle with the wind pulling at your hair, and I woke with a single blue bead in my palm. It was not in the bowl. It was not on the nail. I have no idea how it got there, but I am keeping it on the windowsill where the light comes through, and I am saving you a feather for your own.
Write when the tide lets you.
Love, Maud
