Feather tattoo on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small feather is tattooed on the side of an ankle and foot, angled diagonally with its quill toward the top right. The linework is fine and the barbs are shaded in grey and black to suggest soft texture. Two beaded anklets and a cord bracelet sit above the tattoo against a teal and purple background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada found the gull under the slipway on the Tuesday, already stiff, one wing folded wrong beneath it. She took only the longest primary, the one that had caught the wind over the harbour for years, and put it in her coat pocket, where it crumpled against her keys all the way up the hill.

By evening it had uncurled on the sill of the net loft. Grey barbs fanned out from the quill like harbour slate after rain, soft and frayed at the edges, and the tip bent toward the window as if listening for a boat. Her brother Tom leaned in the doorway with his tea going cold and said it was bad luck to keep a dead bird's feather indoors. Their nan had kept one in every coat she owned, Ada told him, and she had never once been drowned, though she had been married to a man who fished the Forties for thirty years and came home every time.

Tom laughed and said that proved nothing. He was sailing on the Brigid at four the next morning, a deckhand's berth he had wanted since he was nine, and he knew better than to ask her to keep the feather for him. She went down to the quay with him anyway, in the dark, and when the lines came off she pressed it into his palm.

He turned it over under the lamp. Then he tucked it inside his oilskin, against his shirt, and the trawler slid out past the wall. Ada watched until the stern light was smaller than a gull's eye, and only then did she notice that her hand was still closed around nothing at all.
