A long feather is drawn down the forearm, with a thin central shaft, fine outlined barbs and soft grey shading on the vane. A second, fainter feather outline sits above it near the elbow. The image is black and grey, with a gold bracelet and heart charm on the wrist and blonde hair and a light surface in the background.

The wind on Harrow Gap takes hats, dogs and once a whole tarpaulin, so you keep the lead looped twice around your hand and your eyes on the cairns. Ada is ahead, counting them out loud the way her grandfather taught her, while you read the weather instead: cloud sitting on the north face, a smear of rain coming in off Cold Fell, the light turning the colour of pewter.

Half a mile above the tarn you find the feather. It lies on a slab of wet slate as though someone set it down to keep their place in a book, a long grey primary with the shaft still straight and every barb combed back by the gusts. Ada says it belongs to a goshawk, and you believe her, because she has never once been wrong about birds. You tuck it into the strap of your pack, where it knocks against the flask all the way down.

At the bottom, where the path gives up and becomes lane, you take it out to show the farmer's wife at Low Scar. She turns it over, then holds it up so the sky runs through the vanes. Behind her, pinned to the dresser, is a sketch of a second feather you have never seen before, paler, drawn just above the first. Ada laughs and says the mountain keeps its own accounts. You leave the feather on the gatepost under a flat stone, and when you look back from the stile the wind has lifted it free and is carrying it slowly up towards the pass.
