Wing tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a large wing tattoo running up the outer forearm, with individual feathers outlined and shaded in black and grey. The linework is bold and the shading gives the feathers depth, fading toward the lighter skin at the edges. A gold wristwatch and chunky gold chain bracelet sit at the wrist against a pale, fluffy fur background.

You are sent to the goldsmith's back room in Ur because your hands are steady and your tongue is not. The master has been beating gold leaf since the rains came early, and the order is for a chain of twelve links, each hammered thin enough to show lamplight through. He sets a clay mould on the bench and says the wing goes at the end, where it will catch the eye when the bearer lifts a cup.

You work through the night. You press wax into the mould, feather by feather, long primaries first and the short coverts after, each quill cut with a bronze knife so the ridges run clean. Where the shadow should fall, the master shows you how to dab a paste of soot and resin, so the gold darkens at the root and lightens toward the tip, as if the feather were fading back into the air. Your fingers blister and you do not stop.
A rider arrives before dawn with a sealed tablet. The official who ordered the chain has fallen out with the palace, and the order is cancelled. The master tells you to melt everything for ingots and not to waste time being sorry. You obey, but when the crucible glows you slip the finished wing from the mould and tuck it under your sash, still warm.
By noon the chain is a grey puddle on the cooling stone. Nobody counts a piece that was never delivered, so nobody asks where the wing went. Years later you will wear it on your own wrist, and a child will ask why a feather is made of metal, and you will say only that some things are too fine to sell.
