The gulls have been quarrelling over the rock since Tuesday, and I have made a rule that nobody sweeps the gallery until the wind drops. You would laugh at me. Half the lamp room is now feathers, grey and white, caught in the seams of the glazing where the spray comes up over the rail. Mr Pryce says I am turning into a magpie, but I have kept the best one, a long primary with its barbs still fanned out like the fingers of a hand that has forgotten how to close.

I found it on the ledge below the lantern at first light, wedged against the iron. It had come a long way, I think, from the stacks on the far side, and it was still supple enough to bend. I carried it down to the kitchen and held it under the lamp. Fine grey lines ran along its length, and where the vanes darkened towards the tip there was a blue-grey shadow, like the sea just before a squall. You told me once that every feather is a little map of the wind. I did not believe you then, but I have been reading this one all morning.
