Shaded feather tattoo on the side of the body

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single feather is tattooed on the skin, drawn at a diagonal with a dark quill and softer grey barbs fading toward the tip. The linework is soft and the shading builds depth along the vane. The feather sits against a plain, lightly lit background of skin in a close, square crop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming down on Saltergate market since before the stalls opened, and Old Hanna Pyle had her tarpaulin tied low over her feathers. Pigeon, jay, a heron plume kept dry in a biscuit tin. Nobody bought feathers in the wet, she always said, because wet feathers lie about which way they want to go. A boy came in under the canvas with his collar up and asked for the grey one at the back, the one with the dark quill and the softer barbs that faded toward the tip.

She told him it was a goose flight feather from the Marsh Fen, and that it would carry him wherever he dropped it. He paid with a bent sixpence and a brass button. He asked if it would fly straight. Hanna said feathers never fly straight, they only fly honest, and that was the whole trade. He laughed, tucked the quill inside his coat against his ribs, and went off between the fish carts with the rain running off his hat brim.

Four days later the sky was blue for the first time since spring, and a letter arrived at the stall in a hand she did not know. Folded round nothing but a bramble leaf, it said the feather had slipped from his coat on Lamb Bridge where the water ran highest. The wind had taken it out over the river and set it down on the far bank beside a girl mending a kite with string and spit. The girl had picked it up, looked at it a long while, and then flown the kite again, higher than anyone on that bank had seen it go.

Hanna read the letter twice, then slid it under the tin lid. She took another grey feather from the tray, licked her thumb, and laid it on the counter with its tip pointing toward the river, the way she set them out for anyone who looked as though they needed a direction.
