Warm reds, browns and purple wash tones are used across the image, with the feathers fading into the background at the edges of the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth Okonedo had the headdress on the padded table for three weeks before she let herself lift a single quill. The loan papers from the store in Hull said only "ceremonial, early twentieth century, family deposit", and the box it arrived in smelled of cedar and old smoke. Her job was to stabilise the rawhide band and log every losses, not to wonder who had stood under it.

The damage was ordinary and cruel: moth at the base of the red-dyed plumes, a split in the brow band where a bead cord had worn through. She sorted the loose feathers into shallow trays by colour, brown, white, red, and wrote each tag in pencil. Her supervisor, Dennis, said the family would want the originals returned as they were, not improved, so she mended what she could and left the rest alone.

On the last afternoon a woman called Maren Goodall drove down from Leeds to collect it. She stood at the table turning one of the trays in her hands and found the smallest red quill, the one Ruth had set aside as too far gone. She asked if it could go back in with the others. Ruth said it was broken. Maren said that was exactly why.

Ruth laid it in the tissue at the edge of the bonnet, where the fringe lifted in the draught from the door, and closed the box with the pencil list tucked inside.
