Feathered headdress portrait on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A large portrait of a man wearing a feathered headdress with a beaded band, and several strands of beaded necklaces at the chest. The face has smooth blended shading with strong contrast, and the feathers are rendered with fine highlights and soft grey tones. The image shows the same tattoo twice side by side on a lower leg, with a plain tiled background.

The rain has found the gap in your awning again, and it drips onto the box of loose prints you have been meaning to sort since Tuesday. You lift the one on top with two fingers, the way you would lift a moth. Grey card, a studio backdrop gone soft at the edges, the light set from one side as if the photographer only wanted the light to do the talking. Someone has written on the back in pencil: Hastings, 1931, for the Co-op. Nothing else.

Dilys, who sells tinned peaches and cracked teapots from the next pitch, leans under her tarp to look. She says the headdress came out of a theatrical costume house that shut before her husband died, and that every photographer on the coast borrowed the same trunk of feathers and bead collars. "Nobody asked where the feathers came from," she says. "They only asked whether they'd photograph well." You turn the card over again, and the pencil looks more tired than it did a minute ago.

You decide, against sense, to keep it. You slide it into a plastic sleeve, tuck it inside your coat where the rain cannot reach, and walk home the long way past the closed bank and the chip shop with its steamed windows. The street lamps come on one by one, smudged in the wet, and you find yourself counting the buttons on your coat as you go, the way you would count beads on a string you were making for someone you would never meet.

At the door you take the sleeve out and prop it against the kettle, face out, so it can look at the room while the water heats. The drips from your hair spot the plastic. You wipe them with your thumb and leave the card where it is.
