Woman in profile with rose on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A woman's head in side profile is shown with dark hair swept back and a red rose with green leaves tucked into it. She wears a gold beaded necklace and a teal and gold pendant earring. Bold black outlines, flat fills and a solid, graphic composition are typical of the traditional style, and the tattoo sits on a forearm against a white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rose had gone limp in the heat by the time the truck pulled off the highway, so Hester pinned a fresh one above her ear, a red one from the tin bucket behind the counter. The driver from Barstow always tipped more when she looked like she had dressed for company, and there was no company on Route 9 that didn't come in for water.

She kept the pendant polished, a teal glass drop set in gold that had belonged to her mother, and she wore it swinging against her jaw while she worked the till. The beads came from a string her husband had bought off a trader in Needles the year before the well dried up. He used to say a woman who sold fuel in the middle of nothing ought to look like a painted sign, bright enough to read from the road.

She had painted the sign herself, and it was cracked now, the paint run into the letters so the words looked like they were leaking. Still, the road kept sending people. A young couple in a borrowed car asked whether the next town had a motel. Hester told them there was one, sixty miles on, if the sand hadn't drifted over the bridge, and watched them decide to stay anyway.

When their headlights had gone, she unpinned the rose and laid it on the dashboard of the pickup, where the sun could bring it back. Then she went inside, counted the change twice and turned the card in the window to CLOSED, though it was barely four in the afternoon.
