Traditional flower tattoo on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A bold flower design with a mandala-style centre sits on the outer upper arm, with pointed teal-green petals and black outlines. The centre is shaded in black and grey with red and orange accents, and orange tips appear between the petals. The bright colours stand out against the skin, and the design is framed by a plain white paper towel and a dark background.

Mind the puddle by the fish stall, it's been there since Tuesday and it has ambitions. Come under the awning, all of you, the rain won't stop for anyone's good opinion. Right, you want the one about Hettie Marrow and the dahlia clock?

Hettie kept a stall at the back of Ludlow Market where the gutters ran faster than the buyers. She sold buttons and mended what came to her, and in the wet months she sat under a blue tarpaulin with a tin of threads and a lamp that smelled of paraffin. Every morning a lad with a barrow leaned on her gate and asked the same thing. Had she finished the clock yet?

No clock had ever been finished in that stall. Hettie had a glass dome with a crack across it, a brass face beneath, and in the middle a hole the size of a sixpence where the hands should go. She said the hands were out at the rim of a flower that had not yet opened, and until it did, time would wait its turn with everyone else in the rain.

On the last Saturday in October the lad came and did not ask. He held out his palm, where he had pressed a teal dahlia he'd found by the canal, its points bitten orange and red by the first frost. Hettie set it into the hole. The rain stopped for the length of a breath, the gutters went quiet, and then the whole market began to tick.
