Feathered wing tattoo on the ankle
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded wing with layered feathers runs up the side of the ankle, with the tip pointing towards the shin. The feathers use dark outlines and grey shading to create depth and texture. The photo is taken from a low angle on a tiled floor, and the foot with painted black toenails sits in the lower right of the frame.

Nobody else would climb the old Bramley at Harrow Lane that August, so the pickers left the top rows to me and the wasps. I was halfway up the ladder with a canvas bag at my hip when I saw the bird on the wall below, one wing folded wrong, its feathers dark as wet slate against the hot brick.

I knew the trick from my grandfather: a towel, a cardboard box, and no talking. He kept rooks in the shed for years, and their wings never healed quite straight, so they stayed with him. The jackdaw did not like the towel. It pecked my knuckle hard enough to raise a bead of blood, then went still and let me lift it, its primaries spread and shivering as if they remembered the air.
By dusk the orchard was empty except for the windfalls thudding into the long grass. I drove the box to the rescue on the Ashford road with the van windows down, the passenger seat sticky with cider from the crates I had not unloaded. The woman at the desk ran her thumb along the wing, slow and certain, and said it would fly again by spring if I kept it away from the cats. I asked how she could tell. She said the feathers on the good side lay flat and that a bird knows its own weight.
I walked back to the orchard in the dark. The highest branch of the Bramley was still heavy with fruit that nobody would pick, and a single feather, grey at the tip, lay on the wall where the jackdaw had been.
