Traditional colour tattoo of a bottle with orange smoke rising from it and a black banner reading FELIX, on a limb of the body.

Felix banner and bottle tattoo

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A bottle with a rounded base and narrow neck sits at the centre, with wavy orange and yellow smoke rising above it, a grey stone shape at the top, and small star and dot accents. A black-outlined banner across the bottle reads FELIX, with a red wash beneath it. The bold black outlines are filled with flat orange, yellow and red, set against plain skin in a close, vertical crop.

Dear Win,

You will not believe the Saturday we have had at the Palais. Mr Felix Harrow came up the back stairs with a crate on his shoulder and a bottle the size of a church candle, and he set it down on the bandstand as though it were the Crown Jewels. Every time he eases the cork the smoke rises orange and gold, straight up into the lamps, and the band plays faster to keep pace with it. Mum would have fainted.

He is no conjuror, he says, only a chemist who lost his shop in Lewes when the bank called in its debts. He sells a tonic that makes the feet light, and Cousin Ada had three glasses of it and danced the Lambeth Walk with the coal scuttle. Felix keeps a grey stone from the Downs in his waistcoat pocket. He says it is the last of the old magic and that he will not sell it for any money.

Last night the smoke stopped mid-air and the lamps dimmed to a blue glow. Felix lifted the bottle and tipped it and nothing came out but a single star, which drifted off towards the cloakroom. He laughed and said the smoke always goes to whoever dances first when the room is too frightened to move. So I took his hand, and we danced until the caretaker switched off the lights and the stone glowed in his pocket like a coal.

Don't tell Mum. I am meeting him again on Thursday, and I have already decided to wear the blue dress.

Your loving sister, Dot
