Female face with snakes, crown and eye
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A drawn tattoo design showing a woman's face in shaded greyscale, framed by red snake forms, a black crown set with red gems and a large open eye above. Fine dotted and stippled linework fills the ornamental panels and the collar below the face. Black and grey shading gives the face and eye depth, while the red snakes and gems provide the main colour accents against a pale paper background.

The crate arrives at ten past two, tagged for a dealer in Antwerp, and you open it because the paperwork smells of somebody's hurry. Inside, wrapped in grey felt, is a mirror no wider than a dinner plate. Its frame is black lacquer worked with a lace of dots and small stitched rosettes, and across the top sits a crown set with four red stones. Beneath the crown a single eye is painted, wide and red-rimmed, and around the lower curve of the glass snakes coil in a ring of carmine, every scale picked out by hand.

The declaration says ceramic tiles. You tilt the mirror under the strip light and the glass gives back your own face, pale and tired, with the painted eye hanging just above your left shoulder. Something in the reflection is slower than you are. It is dry paint, you tell yourself, and you have worked nights long enough to know that tiredness draws shapes out of dark corners.
Pooja leans in with the torch and says to stamp it and send it on. You agree, and then you look again. The eye has turned. It is not looking at the glass any more. It is looking at you, and the lid is lowering the way a customs seal presses into wax, deliberate and unhurried.
You sign the form. Under declared contents you write tiles, and you do not look at the mirror again. All the way home you feel the eye on the back of your neck, patient as a stamp waiting for the next crate.
