Fern frond across a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A fern frond curves from the collarbone over the shoulder and down the upper arm, built from rows of small, short strokes along a central stem. The top section is solid black and the lower section fades into light blue, so the colour moves gradually along the design. The subject fills the frame against a plain pale background, with a black strapless top below the tattoo.

You have the press open on the kitchen table when the carrier's boy knocks, and the fronds inside have already gone the colour of stewed tea. Your sister says you should stop collecting before the glass cabinet swallows the whole parlour. You tell her a fern is only a fern until it is pressed, and after that it becomes a record.

Quarrendon's nursery sold you the Killarney specimen in March, a wiry thing in a tin, and by June it had worked its way into the glasshouse wall like a rumour. You learned to split the rootstock with a butter knife. You learned that northern ferns sulk in London soot, and that Mr Pell, who wrote the catalogue, had never once walked the lane above Wyke Beck at dusk. There, the undersides of the lowest pinnae catch the last of the light and hold it blue for a minute after everything else has gone grey.
Nobody in the village will sell you the bank, so you go up with a trowel in a sack, the dog trotting ahead, and cut the frond at its base. The stem runs green and then black where the sun cannot reach. You count the pinnae in rows, twelve, fourteen, nineteen, and you know you will never finish counting them, which is precisely why you like it.
Last Sunday you pressed the largest one between blotting paper and wrote the label in your best copperplate: Wyke Bank, eighth of September, light failing. The cabinet has room for one more drawer. You lay the frond along the top shelf, black at the root and blue at the tip, and close the drawer on the dusk.
