The ferryman's widow kept her husband's fans in a lacquered box under the stair of the Crane Inn, and in the third week of snow she took them out one by one and laid them on the long table in the kitchen. There were seven. Each had been folded shut the day he went out onto the lake, and each had a sea painted on its paper in ink so fine the waves seemed to move when the stove breathed.

The innkeeper's boy, Tomas, had been sent to fetch the lamp oil and stayed to watch. He asked why the fans were all open now, though no one had opened them.
She said the lake was telling them where the ice was thin. You opened a fan toward the water and the waves on it turned the way the current ran under the white. Her husband had known this. She had not, until the morning she found the first fan open on the sill with a single wet thread of reed caught in its spokes.
Tomas held the largest fan up to the window. Beyond the glass the snow lay level and grey, and far out a dark line ran straight across it. The painted waves on the paper were pulling toward that line. He said nothing. She took the fan from him, folded it shut with a small click, and wrapped all seven in oilcloth to carry down to the shore before the light went.
