Fern frond tattoo on the ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single fern frond is tattooed in solid black ink along the side of the ribs, with a central stem and rows of leaflets drawn in clean outline with fine interior detail. The frond angles diagonally from upper left to lower right on pale skin. A hand with dark nail polish and rings sits at the top edge, and patterned fabric is visible at the sides.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last fern on Corrow Ridge lived in a tin box under the floor of the grain house, and every spring the old women lifted the boards to see whether it had forgotten them. Nobody alive had seen it grow. They knew only that a frond must be kept out of the sun, and that a single leaflet picked off the stem would bring bad luck to the house that lost it.

Ansel Pike was twelve the spring he took the box. He wanted the silver coins the traders paid for anything living, and he told himself the old women were fools who kept a dead leaf for courage. He ran with it down the ridge road, past the glass towers gone green with lichen, and he did not stop until the bell tower of the drowned town showed above the reeds.

There he opened the box and found the frond had not dried at all. Its leaflets lay flat and dark, each one cut in neat teeth like the edge of a key, and the stem ran down from the crown to a point no thicker than a hair. He held it up to the light and the stem seemed to lean, the way a finger points at a door.

He followed it. He walked the reed causeway all that afternoon, past three collapsed pumping stations and a field of rusted wheels, and at dusk the stem pointed him into a shaded hollow under a broken dome. Water dripped there. Ferns rose from every crack in the floor, thousands of them, each folded tight as a fist. Ansel set the frond down among them and, for the first time in his life, he was afraid to take anything home.
