Fern leaf tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single fern frond is tattooed vertically on the outer forearm, with its central stem running down the arm and paired leaflets arranged along it. The linework is fine and detailed, and the shading is soft, giving the leaflets some depth. The ink is a single dark olive-grey tone against pale skin, and the plain grey top and olive trousers keep the background neutral.

Nobody had watered it since the spring rota changed, and its lower fronds had gone the colour of wet paper.

She filled a plastic jug at the sluice sink, careful of the splash. Her pager buzzed twice, a bed in Bay C wanting a blanket, and she left the jug on the desk and went. By the time she came back the sky over the car park had turned from black to the grey of a school jumper, and she picked up the jug again without thinking.

Water darkened the soil. Then she saw it: low down, between two dead stalks, a green fist no bigger than a thumbnail, rolled tight like a watch spring. She had seen fiddleheads on walks as a girl, along the bank above the reservoir, and had forgotten how long they take to open. Every night at this hour, she thought, someone would have to be the one who noticed.

She set the jug down and crouched, knees cracking, and touched the curl with one finger. It gave a little, the way a sleeping thing does. "Not yet," she said to it, and then, because no one was there to hear, she said it again and stayed crouched until the first trolley rattled past the lift.
