Small black pine tree tattoo with shaded foliage on the inner forearm of a person wearing a navy dress and a gold watch.

Pine tree on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small pine tree with a thin straight trunk is tattooed on the inner forearm, shown from the elbow down to the wrist. The foliage is built from fine, dark, feathery strokes with soft grey shading toward the edges, and the tree sits near the centre of the arm against plain white background. The person's face is not in frame, and the navy dress and gold wristwatch are visible around the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your father never let you touch the seedlings until your hands were washed clean of the morning's frost, and even then only the ones in the cold frame behind the nursery at Halsey Cross. He said a pine remembers the first hand that holds it. You believed him the way you believed the bus timetable, mostly because nobody had yet proved otherwise.

The council wanted the old Scots pine on Tarrant Rise taken down for the new bypass, and the men with the measuring chains came in March with their clipboards and their cigarettes. You walked up with a tray of saplings under your arm and found them arguing with the ground. The tree stood alone above the hedgerows, its trunk bare for thirty feet, its crown thinning into feathers that scraped the sky. Nobody in Halsey Cross could say how old it was. Your father said it had seeded itself from a single cone blown across the moor in some hard winter before anyone kept records.

You sold the men a dozen young trees instead, and they didn't argue. Your father shook your hand that evening as if you had closed a deal worth a farm. Two weeks later you stood on the rise yourself and watched the bulldozer stop short of the trunk. The surveyor had bent his road a foot to the left, and the pencil line curved around the roots like a question mark that had decided against asking anything. The tree stayed where it was, and so did you, watching it until the light went.
