Three chevrons on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a woman's forearm with three thin black chevron lines stacked vertically, each pointing downward. The linework is clean and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The grey wooden fence and light blue top keep the focus on the small tattoo.

Three coats, one stencil, a tin of black gloss that smelt of pear drops. Between coats you sat on an upturned ply crate with your sleeves shoved past the elbow and watched Tove, the girl who counted tokens for the waltzer, chew the end of her biro while she tallied the morning's float. The last mark you did freehand, because the stencil had split down the middle. It came out a fraction steeper than the others. Mr Oduya noticed it from the ticket hatch and said nothing, only tapped his cigarette against the rail and nodded at it, as though it were a joke he had been waiting all season to hear.

That evening the slide took its first rider, a boy in a yellow anorak who stopped at the top, looked down at the three black marks, and let go.
