Tom, the north side of the pass has been sealed since Tuesday, so I'm giving this letter to the salt carrier, who swears he will be down by dark. Don't read it by the stove. The ink smudges when it gets damp, and so does my hand when I write in this cold.

You'll remember Father's marks on the lintel of the watch hut. Everybody in the valley thought they were his initials, a tradesman's scratch, but they were a signal book, plain as a ledger once you know it. The hooked letter means the cloud is down. The chevron means worse than it looks. The leaning N with its bar means stay put. And the arrow, the one he cut deepest, means go this way, and never trust the snow shelf above the cairn.

Last Thursday, with the light going the colour of pewter, a lamp came up the old track from Harrow. I chalked the chevron on the shutter, then the arrow, pointing east towards the gully. The lamp stopped. Then it moved, slowly, along the line I'd given.

I've kept my own lamp burning in the window since, though nobody has come over the ridge. I can't say whether they reached the gully or the cairn. The arrow is the only word the mountain ever taught me to trust, so I'm pointing it at you now: come up in the morning, and bring rope.
