Fine line arrow and bow on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line tattoo of an arrow passes vertically through a bow with curled, leaf-like details along its limbs. The linework is thin and even, rendered in black ink with no shading. The design sits centrally on the upper back against plain skin, with a coral strap and framed artwork visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Cook Mattie Rourke had been feeding the crew of the Halcyon Wren for eleven days when the bosun asked her to fetch the bow from the locker. Nobody aboard had strung it since the old navigator died off the Azores. It was a short ash bow, pale as bread crust, and when she lifted it the wood was warm from the galley stove on the other side of the bulkhead.

Her grandmother used to say a bow remembers the tree it came from. Wood cut in a dry year keeps its leaves in the grain and will put them out again if it is kept too close to a fire. Mattie did not believe this until she saw fine green tendrils curling from the limbs where the string sat, thin as hair, and the same curl stamped on the nock of the arrow still lying in the quiver.

She carried the bow up on deck at the turn of the tide and drew it toward the coast, where a boy in a fishing skiff was waving at them. The arrow flew straight up instead, a plain black line through the morning. It hung at the top of its arc for a long breath, then dropped back down the galley hatch and stood upright in the pot of barley soup without sinking.

The crew ate that soup for a week and nobody asked Mattie where the leaves came from. The bow stayed on a hook above the stove after that, where it could watch the pot. When the vine work reached the ceiling beams, she knew the wind had turned for home.
