Castle outline on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black fine line outline of a castle with several spires and a small arched doorway at the base. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the design sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The image is taken close up, with a sunflower-patterned fabric and a blurred arcade cabinet in the background.

The backdrop had hung in the big shed at Pennick's since the summer the carousel lost a horse, and Ray Dacre was the only man left who knew how to mix the grey for its battlements. Nobody asked him to paint anything any more. The council wanted a new frontage of glass and chrome, so the old castle was rolled up like a carpet and left to gather mouse droppings behind the candyfloss machine.

Then in February a girl of nine came in with her mother to ask about the arch. Her name was Dilys, and she had drawn the castle on a paper napkin, every spire of it, and she said the door at the bottom was the only bit that mattered because that was where you walked in. Ray told her the door had been painted over twice. She looked at him as though he had said something stupid about the weather.
He got the ladder out that Saturday. The spires were easy, since he had hung the thing himself forty years back, but the arch had lost its curve to the damp and he kept shading it wrong. Dilys came every afternoon for a week and sat on an upturned crate, narrating the windows he had forgotten. Three had shutters. One had a cat. He painted the cat in with a brush meant for pinstriping, and she clapped twice, sharply, like a magistrate.
On the last day he stepped back and saw that the arch was too small to walk through, which was the point of it, the way a doorway is always smaller in the drawing than in the life you bring to it. Dilys said it was perfect. Her mother asked how much. Ray said nothing. He lifted the backdrop onto the rail and let it unspool down the length of the shed with a sound like a long breath, and the castle stood there again, its little door open to nobody but the mice.
