Pinky promise hands on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The subject is a small outline drawing of two hands hooking their little fingers together, shown from the back of a person with dark hair tied up. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, so the design reads as a simple single-line illustration. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin, centred in the upper back against a black top and a plain light background.

Sit nearer, the lamp is failing and I have no breath to shout across the refectory. You want the tale of the two girls from Scarrow Fell? Very well. Their names were Ada and Wenna, as alike as two wrens on a wall, until the spring their father sold the far meadow to the wool merchants and Ada was sent down the valley to learn the loom trade in Kendale.

At the stile above the village they had a custom. Every dusk, before the bell from the chapel, they climbed the three worn steps, hooked their little fingers together over the top rail, and swore by the old post that whoever walked farther would send word back. Ada went down into the smoke of the mills. Wenna stayed with the goats and the stubborn dog and the sheep that would not be counted. Each evening she still climbed to the stile and held out her hand to nothing but the wind.

The pass closed early that year. Snow sat on the fell for five months, and the carriers stopped coming up. Wenna went to the stile every night all the same, lantern in one hand, the other hooked through the air at the height of her shoulder, as though a small cold finger might still be waiting for hers.

In the thaw a boy came up the track with a letter sewn into his coat. It held two words in a cramped hand: Still walking. Wenna tied the paper to the top rail with a loop of red wool, and when she hooked her finger through it that night, the knot held.

What do you suppose the novices make of that? Ah. Go to bed, the bell is going.
