Dear Mags, I've taken the last bus out past the cathedral, the one that smells of wet wool and chips, and I'm writing this on the back of a pharmacy receipt because my notebook went under the seat at the depot. You'll laugh, but the driver knows every stop by its pigeons. He calls them out like a register.

The man at the shop on Tanner Lane wouldn't sell me the thing I came for. He said a girl alone at midnight with a fistful of notes and a sketch on a napkin was a story he'd heard before and didn't want to be part of. So I did what you always told me to do and I stood there until he asked me what I wanted. I wanted a line that pointed somewhere. That was all. He drew it freehand on the counter in biro, one stroke, the shaft running flat as a level, then the head, then the feathers splayed like a bird that has just stopped flying. He said it would be paler than I expected. He said the good ones always are.

I'll be home by two if the 42 keeps its manners. Tell Dad the cat's been fed. Tell him I didn't forget the tin opener this time, which is more than he ever managed. I'll send the drawing when I've got the right light for it.
