Dachshund outline with pink bow on the foot

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A black outline drawing of a dachshund in profile, with its long body and short legs, sits on the top of a bare foot. A small pink bow is tied at the neck and is the only colour in the design. The line weight is thin and even, and the simple composition is photographed straight on against a wooden floor.

The last poster had blown off the fence at Spalding, so Nell pinned a handwritten one to the caravan door and hoped the rain would hold off until the matinee. Forty-one pounds, a few coppers, and a button that somebody had mistaken for a shilling.

Bramble was already in her costume. Nell had tied the pink bow herself that morning, fussing at the knot until it sat just behind the dachshund's ears, because the ribbon was the only part of the act that still looked new. The dog had outlived two elephants, a strongman who ran off with the cook, and a trapeze troupe that had retired to Skegness. What she had not outlived was the crowd. Bramble still stretched long and low through the hoop of fire, same as always, and the handful of children on the benches clapped as though it were the Coliseum.

After the show, Tobias stood a long time at the flap of the tent, looking at the empty ring. "We'll not see another winter like this one," he said, and Nell waited for the rest of it, the sale of the wagons, the bank, the goodbye. Instead he crouched down and held out a sugar lump.

Bramble took it delicately, then nosed at the bow until it sat straight again. Nell understood then that the dog had never been the one in decline. She had simply been the only one still doing her job.
