Small lightning bolt on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small lightning bolt sits on the outer ankle, shown against a white paper sheet and a dark blue-green surface. The bolt has a thin black outline and an orange fill that shades from yellow-orange to deeper orange. The composition is close and centred on the tattoo, with the foot and heel visible in the frame.

Dear Maureen,

You'll not believe what happened at the Crescent on Saturday. We were halfway through the Lindy when the sky went white over the car park and every light in the place cut out at once. Two hundred people stood in the dark with their hands still on each other's shoulders. Then Stan, our drummer, struck a match off his cymbal stand and lit the stub of a candle, and Mr Hollis from the tea urn started laughing, and then we all did.
Stan had wanted a sign painted on his bass drum since the spring, and the only paint he could get was the orange the council uses on the cones outside the depot. While we waited for the power he painted a bolt on the skin, a jagged, quick thing with a black edge, and when the lights came back it caught the glow and looked like it was still charged. Nobody could say whether that was the candles or the storm still rolling off towards the estuary.
I danced the last waltz with Frank from the bank, the one you said had cold hands. His hands were warm as toast, I can tell you. He didn't say a word about the blackout. He just counted the beat under his breath and let me lead.
Write back soon and tell me Dad's chest is better. I'll keep a dance card for you with a little bolt pencilled in the corner.
Love, Dot
