Pisces symbol on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black Pisces zodiac symbol, two crescent shapes joined by a diagonal line, sits on the side of a finger. The linework is solid and even, with no visible shading, and the design is shown in black ink only. The close-up composition places the finger across the frame with a second finger in the foreground against a plain, soft green-grey backdrop.

The field outside Chorley had gone to mud by Sunday, and the goldfish stall was the only thing on the midway still lit. Ada Pell counted the prize bags twice before she gave up and counted the fish instead. Eleven in the tank, two in the spare bowl, and a pair of white ones with orange smudges that had been circling in opposite directions since the Wigan show. Her brother Sol leaned on the counter and said the generator would not last the week on what the two of them had taken.

The painted board above them showed two fish, one nosing up and one nosing down, joined by a loop of cord that ran from tail to tail. Their grandmother had painted it the summer before she died. She said the cord was not for decoration, that a pair kept together stayed lucky, and so the stall never sold one of that pair without the other. Ada had never asked what she meant. Sol had never stopped asking what the pair would fetch from a collector in Blackpool.
He came back to the trailer at midnight smelling of diesel and cheap cider, and she found the scissors in the sink before she found him. She went out in her socks across the wet grass. The lamp inside the tent threw the bowl into a green shiver, and there was Sol, scissors open, his hand against the glass where the cord was tied through the rim. The two white fish hung at either end of the water, turned away from each other, as they had been all week.
Ada said nothing. She set the lamp on the counter and waited. After a while the fish drifted, slow as anything, until they met at the middle of the bowl and stopped there, nose to nose, the cord slack between them. Sol looked at them for a long time. Then he closed the blades and put the scissors back in the sink.
